I was going to post this on the first of January, but better late than never!
Here are five lists of my personal top fives of 2008.
Enjoy!
Celebrities
5. Paris Hilton
Is there ever a year that Paris Hilton isn't in the spotlight?
2008 is the year that Miss Hilton searched for a new BFF (Nicole Ritchie
not good enough for you anymore, hm?), and more recently got millions of dollars worth of jewellery stolen from her home. Oops.
4. Lindsay Lohan
It's not uncommon for Lindsay Lohan to be dating someone new, but who
would've guessed that someone would be a girl? After several denials,
Lindsay made headlines confirming that she was, in fact, in a loving
relationship with DJ Samantha Ronson.
3. Amy Winehouse
Unfortunately, Amy became the personification of the term "hot mess"
this year, with her constant drug abuse and habit of drunkenly wandering
the streets half naked. As well as this, her on-and-off husband Blake
wound up in jail. And when we tried to make Amy go to rehab, she said
"no, no, no".
2. Miley Cyrus
Miley made many a headline this year, from her several half-naked
suggestive photos that leaked onto the internet to her new 20-year-old
model boyfriend. 2008 is the year that Hannah Montana...sorry, Miley
Cyrus became a household name.
1. Britney Spears
This year Britney Spears continued to prove that, though she is probably
completely insane, we just can't get enough of her. From her new
album to her documentary to her private life, you can't go anywhere
without hearing something about the legendary Miss Britney Spears.
Albums
5. One of the Boys - Katy Perry
2008 marked the year that Katy Perry burst onto the scene with her
annoyingly catchy debut, I Kissed A Girl. Doing so, she managed to cause
a commotion from people who called her homophobic to people who thought she just plain sucked (namely, all of ONTD). Catchy pop tunes and controversy? Sounds like that's enough for my number 5 album of the year.
4. Funhouse - P!nk
"Guess I just lost my husband/I don't know where he went" sings P!nk on
her latest album, proving again that it's her blatant honesty combined
with her feisty attitude that makes her so successful. Funhouse, which
had So What as it's first single, promises to continue churning out hits
throughout the new year.
3. The Fame - Lady GaGa
2008 also marked a debut into the mainstream for Lady GaGa. Her unique
style and passion for pop music made this album a hit. So much so that
even Christina Agularia decided to take a few notes from GaGa...
2. Folie A Deux - Fall Out Boy
Fall Out Boy's fifth album started off with the single I Don't Care, and
showcased just how much they've improved musically since "Fall Out Boy's Evening Out With Your Girlfriend". Folie A Deux (French for "madness of
two") boasts Elvis Costello and Debbie Harris from Blondie as cameos
throughout, as well as several FBR artists.
1. Circus - Britney Spears
The follow-up to the mediocre "Blackout", Britney brought out "Circus"
in 2008, and it instantly became a hit - would you expect any less from
the princess of pop? The first single, Womanizer, with it’s catchy
chorus and great video, along with the title track, proved the album to
be so much better than "Blackout" - it seems to be that Ms. Spears is
back. It's Britney, bitch.

Moments in Television
5. Big Brother Australia axed
After God knows how many years, reality TV show Big Brother was finally
axed in Australia. BB08 caused much controversy when Australia's teenage bad boy (really, Australia? Is that the best we could do?) Corey
Delaney became the youngest BB housemate ever. Unfortunately for us,
Corey proved to be utterly boring (except for a few entertaining
arguments with Bianca), when we discovered (SHOCK!) he was actually a
normal (and kind of nice) teenage boy. So long Big Brother, you won't be
missed.
4. Paris Hilton finds a new BFF
This really needs no explanation, to be honest.
3. Speidi get hitched
Headlines were made all over America when reality TV’s favourite (or, erm, least favourite) couple eloped in Mexico without it being filmed for The Hills! Maybe now they’ll go away on a honeymoon to some island far, far away...
2. Britney Spears' documentary "For the Record"
The whole world tuned in as Britney Spears spoke candidly about her emotional breakdown and divorce, and even had a few tears in between. “For the Record” proved that Britney Spears is still very relevant.
1. Blair Waldorf finally admits she loves Chuck Bass on Gossip Girl
Okay, I might be slightly biased here. But it was a big deal for the 90%
of Gossip Girl viewers who are convinced that Chuck + Blair = OTP! The
show's HBIC, Blair, delivered a tear-inducing speech about how she
wanted to be there for resident bad boy, Chuck, because...gasp...she
loved him! Cue: Audience applause! But wait...we celebrated too soon.
Chuck's reply of "Well, that's too bad" destroyed our built-up hopes. Oh
well. I guess we'll have to wait until January 5th to see what happens
next.

Movies
5. Mamma Mia!
If anybody said that they’d never sung along or danced to an ABBA song in their life, they’d probably be lying. Mamma Mia! managed to combine Meryl Streep, ABBA songs, and a few heart-warming moments into a feel-good musical that everybody could enjoy.
4. Get Smart
Based on the TV show of the same name, Get Smart managed to reach out not only to the original fans of the show, but also a younger generation.
3. Sex and the City
Though it disappointed some, the Sex and the City movie was definitely long-awaited. It quickly became a box office success in America and around the world.
2. Twilight
Love it or loathe it, you've got to admit that there was an insane amount
of hype surrounding this movie. Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson quickly became the most searched for stars on imdb, all because of a reasonably low-budget film based on a vampire novel.
1. The Dark Knight
Speaking of hyped up movies, The Dark Knight was released in 2008 and
definitely lived up to everybody's expectations. The late Heath Ledger's
Joker was brilliantly frightening, and the film had the entire cinema on
the edge of their seats. The box office stats truly prove that The Dark
Knight is the movie of the year.

World Events
5. The economy collapses
Uh oh. George Bush accidentally the economy, is this bad?
4. The world explodes
2008 was the year that everybody freaked out over the Large Hadron Collider, which supposedly was about to cause the end of the world. The thing was, nobody really understood what it actually was, and we’re all still here. Apparently.
3. Proposition 8 passes
Despite the best efforts of GLBT rights protesters and celebrities
alike, California voted "yes" to this proposition, which deemed gay
marriage to be illegal. This was truly a tragedy for equal rights in America.
2. The death of Heath Ledger/”The curse of '08”
From Heath in January to Bettie Page in December, 2008 has built up a reputation for celebrity deaths and accidents. The question is, was it all a coincidence or something more sinister?
1. President-elect Obama
Barack Obama was voted as the next American president in 2008, and everyone sighed in relief that Sarah Palin would not, in fact, be VP of the most powerful country in the world. Obama, a democrat, was seen as a breath of fresh air over Bush’s supposed “reign of terror”, and is also the first African American president in the history of the U.S.
